Joint Forward Air Control Training and Standards Unit (JFACTSU)
JFACTSU is the only NATO and US Joint Services accredited schoolhouse in UK Defence to train Forward Air Controllers. The school is commanded by an RAF Regiment Squadron Leader (OF-3), with a joint staff including RAF fast jet close air support aircrew, specialist qualified signallers and highly qualified ground-based Forward Air Controllers. All 3 Services are represented at JFACTSU as well as several Regiments across Army capabilities.
Understanding of the need
Close Air Solutions are extremely pleased to be supporting JFACTSU as 2 of the directors were formerly the Chief Air Instructors at the unit. During their tenure they craved easy to use realistic simulation, and this has been the driving force behind the development of the iCASS. The iCASS design reduces the burden on instructors, freeing up their capacity to maintain the correct balance of challenge against the student’s perceived skills enabling the most efficient learning transfer.
The immersive Close Air Support Simulator 240 (iCASS 240) is an accreditable FAC/JTAC simulator in accordance with NATO STANAG 3797 and US JFS ESC MOA. Its principle features are:
- 240 by 120 degree field of view in an immersive dome
- Form Fit Function Laser Target Designator and Laser Range Finder
- Form Fit Function Infra Red Pointer – IZLID
- PRC 117 and 152 Radio Emulation
- Digitally Aided CAS (DACAS) Control Unit
- Multiple Source ISTAR Downlink Receiver
- Instructor Operating Station
- Aircrew / Role Player Operating Station
- After Action Review Software
The US Joint Fires Command and NATO both stipulate strict criteria to accredit simulators to replace live controls. Once accredited you can use your simulator to replace live controls for Qualified FACs/JTACs who are maintaining their annual currency. You may soon be able to replace 8 out of the required 12 controls, to become and remain qualified, with a simulator. When you buy an iCASS system you are buying assurance through the NATO and US accreditation process. The CAS team have been through multiple successful simulator accreditations and pre-visits; we will leverage this expertise to ensure you new simulator passes the accreditation with flying colours.
Prepare for the future
The iCASS is designed and built by FAC/JTAC instructors and Simulation Requirements managers; we make it our business to look ahead to future requirements and as such have a close relationship with the policy makers for simulator accreditation. The iCASS been built to exceed the current accreditation requirements, such that if more stringent requirements are put into force in order to replace more controls, the iCASS will meet them with ease.
